What You Can Do

  • What you put into your body has a visible effect on your skin. Start by drinking plenty of water. Experts suggest you drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day.

  • If you smoke, try to quit. Smoking can cause premature aging and wrinkling of your skin.

  • Follow a 3-step skin care regimen, including daily washing with a mild cleanser, moisturizing and application of sunscreen with SPF of 15 or greater.

  • In addition to using sunscreen every day, avoid sun exposure, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the sun is at its strongest. If you are in the sun during these hours, wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeves, sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats.

  • If you have rosacea, avoid your personal triggers, which might be hot drinks, alcohol or spicy foods. Identify what your personal triggers are by using the Progress Journal.

  • To reduce symptoms and prevent new flare-ups, use your doctor-recommended treatment, such as Rosanil® (sodium sulfacetamide 10% and sulfur 5%) Cleanser or MetroGel® (metronidazole topical gel) Topical Gel 0.75%, as prescribed. Keep in mind that you may be able to call your doctor for a repeat prescription instead of having to go for another office visit.

Although rare, local irritation has been reported with topical sodium sulfacetamide and sulfur therapy. Rosanil® Cleanser is contraindicated for use by patients with hypersensitivity to sulfur and sulfonamides and patients with kidney disease. Avoid contact with eyes. Please see full prescribing information.

In clinical trials, patients experienced the following side effects in order of frequency with the use of MetroGel® Topical Gel, 0.75%: skin discomfort (burning and stinging), redness, skin irritation, itching or worsening of rosacea. Individual events occurred in 3% of patients or fewer. Please see full prescribing information.
