Mode of Action
Topical Sodium Sulfacetamide/Sulfur Preparations
Sodium sulfacetamide (SS) is a sulfonamide with antibacterial activity. It is bacteriostatic against sulfonamide sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The most widely accepted mechanism of action of sulfonamides is the Woods-Fields theory, which concludes that sulfonamides act as competitive antagonists to para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). This action restricts the synthesis of folic acid that is essential for bacterial growth.

The exact mode of action of sulfur in the treatment of acne or rosacea is unknown, but it has been reported that it inhibits the growth of P. acnes and the formation of free fatty acids. Sulfur has shown keratolytic, antifungal and antidemdectic properties. Together, SS and sulfur have the potential to be very efficacious against the symptoms of rosacea.

Although rare, local irritation has been reported with topical sodium sulfacetamide and sulfur therapy. Rosanil® Cleanser is contraindicated for use by patients with hypersensitivity to sulfur and sulfonamides and patients with kidney disease. Avoid contact with eyes.
